Alpine flowers

The Dolomites have been a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009 thanks to their unique mountain landscapes of exceptional beauty.
The flora is also diverse, colorful and protected. Here are some of the numerous flowers that bloom between our rugged rocks:

Soldanella

Soldanella (Alpine bellflower)

The Soldanella belongs to the primrose family. The Soldanella grows in the Dolomites and has violet, bell- or funnel-shaped corollas. The Soldanella is one of the first spring plants.

Enzian

Enzian (gentiana)

The gentian belongs to the gentian family with around 200 species.
In the Dolomites, gentians are low herbs with a tubular calyx, bell-shaped with a 4- to 8-lobed crown.
Flowering period: May to June.
Gentian species are protected.
The gentian plant root is used as a folk remedy for digestive problems because of its bitter substances.

Edelweiss

Edelweiß (leontopodium alpinum)

The edelweiss belongs to the daisy family with around 40 species.
In the Dolomites, the edelweiss grows on rocks and stony mats. The edelweiss can grow up to 30 cm tall and has several star-shaped, snow-white, felty bracts on the upper side.
Flowering period: June - September
The edelweiss is a protected species.

Arnika

Arnika (arnica montana)

Arnica belongs to the daisy family.
Arnica, with its yellow flower heads, grows in the Dolomites on moist mountain meadows.
Flowering period: June - August
Arnica is a protected species.
The slightly aromatic flowers are used medicinally as a stimulant and cardiac remedy, but are also used externally as an arnica tincture as an anti-inflammatory for muscular complaints.

Alpenrose

Alpine rose (rhodothamnus)

The Alpine rose belongs to the heather family.
In the Dolomites, the Alpine rose bush grows up to 40 cm tall, has leathery leaves and pink flowers.
Flowering period: June - August

Erika

Erika oder heather (calluna)

Erika belongs to the genus of heather plants with around 700 species.
The evergreen shrubs with needle-shaped leaves and brightly colored flowers usually bloom on rocky and scree ground.
